We can't all do as we're told. Nothing gets done that way. But we can't all go around breaking things out of anger, hurting people out of hatred. The damage of our perpetuated fear only amplifies the pain and suffering of others and inevitably ourselves. A little backbone and some shared wisdom are a much better way to enact change in the world. Disobey, but do so without harming others.

Betty, a friend of mine, was recently given a writing project to put a modern twist on a classic fairy tale, myth, or folk story. These were my suggestions:

Cinderella or Snow White, with drag queens.

Corporate Paul Bunyan

Prometheus Bound and Gagged

Pecos Bill, Attourney at Law

Icarus and Global Warming

The Little Mermaid, redux at an aquarium

Goldilocks and the Three Gay Bears

Johnny Applebong

She didn’t go for any of these.
